Spring Things – a freeform wall hanging

This last week the weather has been kind to us and brought us lovely warm and sunny spring temperatures where I live. Leaves on trees are rapidly unfurling, birds are collecting nesting materials and seeking mates, spring bulbs are blooming — It’s lovely.

The ‘Spring Things’ wall hanging is an attempt to capture this spring feeling in a variety of freeform techniques. It’s made up of several kinds of cords, ribbons and bands, and embellished with tassles, pompoms and flowers. A restricted color palette of greens, white, yellow and orange was used.

Spring Things was inspired by a Jan Messent wall hanging called Hanging Things. A picture of it forms the frontispiece of ‘Designing for Embroidery from Ancient and Primitive Sources’, published in 1976.
